For you were called to freedom, brothers; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
Galatians 5:13
Christ came that we might live in freedom (Galatians 5:1, 13; John 8:36). The slave must do exactly what he is told, but the free man has the option of selection. To let religion encroach upon what Jesus gives you freedom in is called "legalism".
The desire of a Christian is to not sin. One of the words for sin is "hamartia" (Greek): it means "to miss the mark". This refers to shooting an arrow at a target but not hitting the bullseye. As one who was an avid archer, I can tell you that hitting the bullseye was not that difficult. It wasn't just the size of the arrow. The bullseye on my tournament targets was 3.1 inches. Anywhere in that bullseye counted as 5 points, whether you hit the top area, bottom area, or dead center.
Likewise, we can make numerous choices in our life and still be in the will of God. Our occupation, what we wear to church, what we choose to eat, etc. All have elbow room in our freedom in Christ. I think even who we choose to marry is variable, so that no one has the excuse of "I picked the wrong person".
Does the Lord know the result of our choices ahead of time? Sure; if He didn't, He would not be God. But to be locked into every choice in life and have no options for variation would not only be legalistic, it would invoke a constant fear in us of offending the God Who wants us to live a life in joy. As long as a choice honors Christ, live free!
