THE SEAT OF FINISHED WORK
Every priest stands daily ministering... but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God. Hebrews 10:11-12
In the ancient Tabernacle, there was a lampstand, a table, and an altar—but there never was a chair. The priests of the Old Covenant were forbidden to sit because their work was never finished. Day after day, they stood to offer sacrifices that could never truly take away sins. Their standing was a constant reminder of an incomplete task.
But then came Jesus.
Unlike the countless priests before Him, Jesus offered one sacrifice for all time—His own body. When that work was complete, He did what no earthly priest could ever do: He sat down.
This posture of rest changes everything for the believer. Jesus sitting at the right hand of God is the divine declaration that the debt is paid. He doesn’t sit because He is tired; He sits because He is finished. As A.W. Pink noted, the old priests were many, but He is one. They offered endless sacrifices; He offered one. They stood in service; He sits in honor.
Because He is seated, we know His work is:
Final: No further payment for sin is required.
Victorious: He reigns in honor while His enemies become His footstool.
Perfect: By one offering, He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.
If you are exhausted by the effort of trying to “earn” God’s favor, look to the Chair. Your High Priest is not standing, frantically seeking ways to atone for your failures. He is seated in victory. Because His work is finished, your soul can finally find rest.
Are you still “standing” in your own effort, or are you resting in Christ’s finished work?
