SEEKING FUN UNDER THE SUN
And I gave my heart to seek and explore by wisdom concerning all that has been done under heaven…and behold, all is vanity and striving after wind. Ecclesiastes 1:13-14
Many years ago, a debate took place on the University of Calgary (Canada) campus between Dr. Norman Geisler (representing Christianity), and Dr. Michael Scribner (representing atheism). It lasted 3 hours and 20 minutes and the topic was: “Does God Exist?” When Michael Scribner went to the podium, he rolled up his sleeves and said, “I didn’t come here this afternoon for an academic exercise. I came here because I do not believe in God and I want to convert all you Christians and make you atheists.” At the end of the debate, Dr. Scribner was asked to summarize his view. He said, “There is no meaning to life, and we are headed for a final nothingness.” A black Christian student stood during the question-and-answer time, and said to Dr. Scribner, “I know Jesus Christ as my personal savior. He has forgiven my sins, and has given me peace and eternal life. You want me to become an atheist. What will you give me in exchange for Jesus Christ?” Dr. Scribner, putting his head down, mumbled into the microphone, “Just reality and hard work.”
That is the reality of life under the sun without the S-O-N. King Solomon’s final conclusion to seeking fun under the sun came after trying worldly pleasure, wit, wine, work, wealth, women (he had 700 wives and 300 porcupinesconcubines!), and worldwide recognition. His conclusion was “For who can eat and who can have enjoyment outside of Him (God)?” (Ecclesiastes 2:25). Has that been your conclusion to life? Or, are you still trying to find ultimate fulfillment in the things that didn’t satisfy the wisest man who ever lived outside of Jesus?
