THE WELL OF MIDIAN
But Moses fled from the presence of Pharaoh and settled in the land of Midian, and he sat down by a well. Exodus 2:15b
Moses, the prince of Egypt at about 40 years of age, went out to his Brethren and looked on their hard labors. He realized that he, too, would have been a slave had not his adoptive mother pulled him out of the Nile and raised him in Pharaoh's house. Seeing an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his brethren, Moses looking to the left and the right and seeing no one, struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. Did Moses see himself as a deliverer to his people? Any pretense of being such a deliverer was destroyed when a Hebrew said to him the next day, "Who made you a ruler or a judge over us? Are you intending to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?"(Exodus 2:14). The matter quickly became known to Pharaoh who intended to kill Moses. So Moses fled from Pharaoh and away from the Hebrew people. Everything he tried to do was a disaster. Moses found himself sitting in the land of Midian by a well. After 40 more years, Moses is before the burning bush and being told to go lead the Israelites out of Egypt, but Moses replies, "Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the sons of Israel out of Egypt?" (Exodus 3:11). Moses finally realized he was utterly nothing. Moses is assured that God would be with him in this task. Friends, we must all realize that we are nothing in ourselves. Anything noteworthy is to God's glory. Perhaps you are at a low point, your own "well of Midian" so to speak. Look up! This could become the turning point in your life when you get yourself out of the way of what God wants to do.
